The University of Sydney’s School of Physics is inviting applications for a Research Associate to join the research team of CUDOS - ARC Centre of excellence in Ultrahigh-bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems. CUDOS is a world-class research centre that has the vision of becoming an international leader in nonlinear photonics. It is committed to demonstrating all-optical processing applications and devices for ultra-high bandwidth optical telecommunications systems.


As Research Associate, the appointee will work with Dr. Kuhlmey and Professor Eggleton, and in collaboration with Professor J. Knight of the University of Bath, on developing novel sensors using long period gratings in photonic bandgap fibres. This appointment presents a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge photonics research, and enjoy the cosmopolitan lifestyle and mild climates of Sydney.


To succeed, the appointee must have a doctorate in a relevant discipline, with demonstrated skills in experimental guided wave optics and electromagnetic modelling. The appointee must be able to demonstrate the capacity to work in a multi-skilled team comprising both theoretical and experimental scientists and have excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with fibre gratings and photonic bandgap fibres will be desirable.


The position is full-time fixed term for two years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.


Remuneration package: up to $86k (which includes base salary, leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
